Map of the 12 August 2026 solar eclipse

Spain at night, as the Moon’s shadow will see it. Tap anywhere and we tell you what the nearest municipality will see: whether the eclipse is total or partial, when maximum arrives and how long totality lasts. How to read the map

Path of totality

The golden band is where the Moon will cover the Sun completely and night will fall for a few moments. The animated dotted line is the centre of the path: the closer to it, the longer totality lasts (up to almost 2 minutes).

Obscuration isolines

Outside the band the eclipse is partial. Each line joins the points with the same maximum percentage of Sun covered by the Moon (99%, 95% and 90%): across the whole peninsula and the Balearics the Moon covers at least around 92% of the Sun.

The Moon’s shadow (umbra)

The dark, soft-edged blot is the umbra: the shadow the Moon casts on Earth, trailed by its wake. On 12 August it crosses the peninsula west to east in about 12 minutes; inside it the eclipse is total. When you play it, the map enters cinema mode (×1 or ×2 speed).

Best villages (top 50)

Switch the layer on in “Capas del mapa” (map layers) and the 50 non-capital municipalities with the most seconds of totality appear as golden stars — the same town-by-town ranking as the 50 best villages list.

What about the Canary Islands?

In the Canaries the eclipse will be partial: the path of totality does not reach the archipelago. You can tap the map there too and get each island’s percentage and local time.

Where this data comes from

The path of totality, the isolines and the umbra animation are computed on a grid of ~26,000 points with the JPL DE440s ephemerides (NASA) using the skyfield astronomy library, and cross-checked against the official data of Spain’s National Geographic Institute published at eclipses.ign.es. Municipality data uses the IGN/INE gazetteer and coordinates (© IGN). The Atlantic stretch visible when you zoom out (or in the intro) is an approximate illustrative trace — labelled as such on the map itself —; the fine computation covers Spain. The “best villages” layer uses the same ranking as the 50 best villages (seconds of totality, capitals excluded). The base map is OpenFreeMap with cartography © OpenStreetMap contributors, re-tinted to our night palette. All times are local (mainland/Balearics CEST; Canaries WEST).
